Rhode Island Prep Schools

The term "prep school" or "preparatory school" is used to describe a private secondary school that is designed to prepare a student for college or university. Prep schools may be either day or boarding schools and can be either single sex or co-ed. Some prep schools are sectarian, but most are non-sectarian with a few specialist prep schools thrown in. Rhode Island has a good cross section of such schools.
  1. Religious Prep Schools

    • A number of Rhode Island's prep schools can be classified as having a religious affiliation. Examples of these are the Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick, which is a Roman Catholic school; the Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island, Providence, a Jewish school; and the Moses Brown School in Providence, which is a Quaker school. There are a number of other Catholic and Episcopal prep schools in the state. Religious prep schools prepare students for college and University while embracing the traditional teachings of their religion.

    Non-Sectarian Schools

    • By far the majority of prep schools in Rhode Island are non-sectarian, having no religious affiliation whatsoever. These include such schools as the Wheeler School and Lincoln School in Providence, Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich and the Moses Brown School in Providence.

    Specialist Prep Schools - Military

    • The Naval Academy Preparatory School is located at Naval Station Newport, RI. The students, who are called midshipman candidates, attend a 10-month course of instruction over three trimesters during which time they study English Composition, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Information Technology. The academic program runs alongside physical, leadership and character development programs at the completion of which successful candidates advance to officer accession through the U.S. Naval Academy. This is the only military prep school in Rhode Island.

    Specialist Prep Schools - Artistic

    • Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts in Providence is a public charter school which, as well as being academically thorough, combines an ongoing theme of the performing arts, preparing students to move into a performing arts field on completion of their studies. The academy programs are woven into the creative side of the city of Providence, and aim to cultivate students to become intelligent and creative, artistic leaders. The academy covers theater, music, dance and film. Rhode Island School of Design in Providence is also an artistic prep school, as is Beacon Charter High School for the Arts in Woonsocket. Perhaps the best known prep school for the arts in Rhode Island is Classical High School in Providence.
