Naval Academy Prep Schools

Admissions to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis is highly competitive. A promising applicant who does not earn admission on his first attempt may be offered a chance to strengthen his application and prepare for a potential Naval Academy appointment through either the Naval Academy Preparatory School or through post-high school study at a preparatory school, military academy or junior or four-year college.
  1. Naval Academy Preparatory School

    • The Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island offers a ten-month course of preparatory instruction for candidates selected by the Naval Academy's admissions committee. The coursework emphasizes English, mathematics, chemistry and physics education within a rigorous military atmosphere. Information technology coursework is tailored to prepare students for the computer skills required to succeed at NAPS and the Naval Academy. Varsity athletic programs include baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, wrestling and track and field. Students spend 18 hours per work in class with mandatory study hours and supplemental tutoring available.

    All-Male Preparatory Schools

    • There are three all-male preparatory schools approved for post-high school study through a Naval Foundation scholarship. These include Avon Old Farms School, in Avon, Connecticut, a liberal arts-based boarding school. Kiski, in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, is a preparatory boarding school with a focus on small class sizes. Salisbury School, in Salisbury, Connecticut, was founded based on the tradition of the Episcopal church. Each of these schools offer post-high school studies for men with Naval Foundation scholarships and other men who wish to further their academic development in preparation for Naval Academy admission.

    Coeducational Preparatory Schools

    • There are eleven coeducational preparatory schools approved for post-high school study through a Naval Foundation scholarship. These include the boarding and day schools of Northfield-Mount Hermon in Mount Hermon, Massachusetts; Mercersburg in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania; Kent in Kent, Connecticut; The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania; Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey; Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio; Peddie School in Highstown, New Jersey; Northwestern Preparatory School in Crestline, California; The Hun School of Princeton in Princeton, New Jersey and Wyoming Seminary College in Kingston, Pennsylvania. There is also a college based preparatory program, Greystone, at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, designed specifically to prepare candidates for admission to the Naval and other service academies.

    Military Preparatory Schools

    • In addition to traditional preparatory school programs, there are four schools offering military school based preparatory programs for Naval Academy preparation. Hargrave Military Academy is an all-male, Christian military boarding school in Chatham, Virginia. Valley Forge Military Academy is a coeducational military academy and college in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Marion Military Institute, a junior college in Marion, Alabama, offers a Service Academy Preparation Program tailored to men and women seeking preparation for service academy admission. The New Mexico Military Institute, in Roswell, New Mexico, offers academy preparation through its junior college program.
