USA Prep Schools

Also known as a "university preparatory school" or a "gymnasium," a prep school is a private independent secondary school that focuses on preparing students for their university education. Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are among those who've studied at a prep school during their lives. Due to often high admission fees, less than 1% of the U.S. population has attended prep school. As of January 2011, there were around 50 prep schools across the country.
  1. The Hotchkiss School

    • An independent co-educational prep school for students from grades 9 to 12, The Hotchkiss School is located in Lakeville, Connecticut. It offers boarding facilities for students, with 12 dormitories on campus. As of the 2009-2010 educational year, the school had 595 students with an average of 12 in each class. A differentiator for the school is its TV station, Hotchkiss Television, operated by the film and photography department. As part of the global Round Square conference, Hotchkiss students may study for a semester at any of the other 50 Round Square educational facilities abroad, including Italy, United Kingdom and France.

    Georgetown Preparatory School

    • The only Jesuit boarding school in the U.S., Georgetown Preparatory School was founded in 1789 in the town of North Bethesda, Maryland. Despite the school's strong ties to the Society of Jesus, students of all religious backgrounds are welcome to attend. Of the 480 students at Georgetown as of the 2010-2011 academic year, around 100 lived on campus.

The mean SAT score for Georgetown is 1292 and the facility offers 24 Advanced Placement classes in various subjects. The school doesn't use bells to indicate the end of classes or the school day.

    St. John's School

It was founded in 1946 and offers its students a 13-year program of education, including the opportunity to study abroad for either a semester or an entire school year in countries such as France, Japan and Vietnam. St. John's has its own fine art center with a 650-seat theatre, dance studios and visual art studio. The school operates a need-blind admission policy, meaning it doesn't take into account a student's financial position when assessing his suitability to study. The 1998 movie "Rushmore" was filmed at St. John's.
