ABC Bartending Schools

Tony Sylvester started ABC Bartending School in 1977 and since that time, ABC has become one of the largest bartending training schools in the United States. ABC supports its students with job placement assistance and the school has a successful track record placing students in bartending jobs.
  1. History & Locations

    • ABC Bartending Schools has grown over the past 30 years from one classroom to the 145 schools that ABC operates today. ABC has a school located in nearly every major U.S. city. It has trained more than 100,000 bartenders and trains thousands of students each year. The Fort Worth, Texas, school offers two-week courses, as well as an accelerated one-week course.

    Admissions & Licensing Requirements

    • The school educates students about the legal aspects of bartending, such as alcoholic beverage control, health and safety, legal responsibility and laws related to bartending. ABC's website provides a search option to inform prospective students about the minimum age requirements for enrolling in a bartending course, which vary from state to state.

    Curriculum

    • Since liquor laws vary from state to state, the curriculum at one school may be different from classes required in other locations. Traditional courses generally include technique and speed training, equipment and setting up a bar, mixology and liquors. Mixology consists of learning how to prepare over 100 different drinks and cocktails. ABC's "profit pouring" class teaches students how to use suggestive selling to increase sales and increase bartender tips. Flair bartending techniques are demonstrated and practiced. Students also learn about wine, wine tasting, how to pour draft beer and how to tap a keg of beer.

Students receive training on how to use a cash registers and credit card processing. Practical advice is also provided such as how to prepare a resume, conduct during a job interview, and how to complete job applications.

    Costs

    • Since liquor laws vary among jurisdictions, the costs of attendance vary depending on where students are enrolled at ABC. The Phoenix-area school, located in the city of Tempe, currently charges $299 for its course as of February 2011. The school provides free lifetime refresher courses for graduates at any of its schools.

The school accepts all major credit cards for payment of tuition, and offers payment plans. As of February 2011, applicants can usually reserve a class position with payment of a $100 deposit.
