Naval Command Schools

The U.S. Navy has training centers and command schools all over the world on shore and at sea. Training and education plays a key role in officer and enlisted advancement. At any stage of a naval career, a sailor will have multiple opportunities for training and education. The top Navy command schools are those that provide undergraduate and graduate level courses. The Navy has three college-level schools that provides naval members with training and degrees.
  1. The Naval Academy

    • Located in Annapolis, Md., the Naval Academy is the undergraduate school for anyone looking for a career filed in the Navy or Marine Corps. The Academy provides a core curriculum that includes science, math, humanities, engineering and leadership. A Bachelor of Science degree is awarded to those who graduate from the academy regardless of the chosen major. A nomination and appointment is required to attend the academy. Students can apply to their senators and congressional representatives for a nomination. The vice president can also provide a nomination.

    Naval War College

    • Located in Newport, R.I., the Naval War College is a command school based on the Newport Naval Station. The College provides professional and mid-career education to officers, midshipman candidates, and senior enlisted personnel. The Joint Professional Military Education provides students with a 10-month curriculum or an abbreviated course for military reservists. The curriculum includes strategy, policy, and security decision making and operations. The College also has a distance education department that provides a curriculum leading to a diploma. The Naval War College also has a Senior Enlisted Academy. The academy is a six-week leadership course for enlisted with above the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

    Naval Postgraduate School Monterey

    • The Naval Postgraduate School, located in Monterey California, has three colleges and a language Institute. Graduate level course work leads to a Masters or Doctorate degree for attending students. A Master's degree program leads to a Masters of Arts, Science, Business Administration or Engineering. The doctorate program leads to a Doctor of Philosophy or Engineering. The school offers the degree programs to military, international and Department of Defense employees. Students can apply online at the school's website.

    Naval Aviation School

    • The Naval Aviation School is located on the Pensacola Florida Naval Air Station. The school provides curriculums in aircrew training, search and rescue training, survival training and aviation safety. These are mid-career training for pilots and aircrews. Students include naval active duty and reserve members requesting orders for assignment to the school.
