The United States Military Academy -- also known as West Point -- is the oldest and most prestigious United States Army school in the country. Founded on March 16, 1802, USMA has had over 50,000 graduates. The student body is known as the "Corps of Cadets," and each year the school has an approximate enrollment of about 4,400 students. Upon graduation, approximately 1,000 cadets graduate each year and are then commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Army.
Secretary of War Elihu Root established the United States Army War College on November 27, 1901, to improve America's military problems which became apparent during the Spanish-American War. The first class convened at the USAWC in 1904, making it one of the oldest Army schools in the country. The student body at USAWC is mostly made of military officers who have at least a few years of experience in the Army. The USAWC focuses on graduating highly-skilled and knowledgable officers, civilians and government officials.
As part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission plan, the Army Logistics University opened its doors in July 2009. ALU consists of three colleges and an academy: the Logistics Noncommissioned Officers Academy, the Army Logistics Management College, the Logistics Leadership College and the newly-created Technical Logistics College. The campus features 200 multi-use classrooms as well as a two-story, 18,000 square-foot library. ALU features 200 courses, some of which were originally offered at other Army schools, including the Transportation School at Fort Eustis, the Aberdeen Proving Ground and the Quartermaster School.
Although the name and location of the school has changed, the United States Army Engineer School has been around for many years. From 1912 until 1988, the school location was at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, but in 1988 the Army Engineer School moved to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. The Army Engineer School has trained thousands of officers, noncommissioned officers and enlisted engineers who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and has also brought their training into civilian life.
