Boston is the home of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. It is somewhat unusual in that the curriculum is closely tied to that of the medical school and dental and medical students take classes together for their first two years. It was founded in 1867 and was the first university-based dental school in the United States. It is well known for its advanced clinical training, facilities and faculty.

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine was founded in 1868 and is located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is known for its forward-looking educational environments and training dentists to have strong biomedical backgrounds. It is closely tied to the Tufts Medical School through teaching and research.

The New York University College of Dentistry was founded in 1865 and is located in the heart of Manhattan. It is the largest dental school in the country and provides education to over 1,600 students every year. It is known for its "firsts," including being the first to use x-ray, having the first departments of pediatric dentistry, endodontics and implant dentistry, having the first family practice program and being the first dental school to offer a completely digitized curriculum, among others.
