The Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) was established in 1897 and was the first dental school to have a close relationship with a medical school. HSDM offers a doctor of dental medicine (DMD) program, an advanced graduate education (AGE) program and a doctor of philosophy program of biological science in dental medicine. Admission to HSDM depends on the program for which the student is applying but all require a bachelor's degree. HSDM's programs are highly competitive. For example, for the 2009-2010 academic year, out of 1,000 applicants to the DMD program, only 35 students were admitted.
