Harvard University, one of nation's premier private universities, opened become the first university-based dental school in the United States in 1867. According to the dental school's website, the university offers a four-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program. Students spend two years in classes with their peers from the Harvard Medical School. Clinical training begins in the third year. In the fourth year, students provide patient care at affiliated institutions. A Ph.D. in biological sciences in dental medicine is also available.

Founded in 1868, Tufts University's School of Dental Medicine offers both pre- and post-doctoral dental medicine programs. The four-year DMD program consists of lectures, seminars, patient simulation workshops and clinical education. Courses are offered in areas such as periodontics, prosthodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial pathology and surgery, endodontics and orthodontics. Some of the courses provide students with certification in areas of specialization. Graduate-level advanced education and post-doctorate education are available in many of the same areas, and specialty fellowship programs are offered in implant dentistry, esthetic dentistry, craniomandibular disorders and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Meharry serves two purposes, according to its website. Foremost, the private medical college produces graduates who become leading dentistry professionals. Secondly, the school provides dental educators for dental schools throughout the nation. The school accepts approximately 55 students annually into its four-year Doctor of Dental Surgery degree program. The school also offers a post-doctoral program in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This program requires a four-year residency and is affiliated with the Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital.

Howard University's College of Dentistry, founded in 1881, offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and post-doctorate programs in dentistry. The university's post-doctoral programs are in the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and pediatric dentistry. A general practice residency is available, and the school offers a dental hygiene program. A combined education program allows students to complete both a Bachelor of Science and a DDS degree within six years rather than the usual eight years.
