In the first two years of the four-year DMD program at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, students study basic sciences, human systems and pathophysiology with students at the Harvard Medical School. Students begin a required research project in year one that concludes with a thesis defense prior to graduation. Clinical training in basic dentistry starts in the third year at Harvard's teaching practice clinic. During year four, candidates visit affiliated dental centers to complete advanced clinical practice in year four. The school offers five year programs that allow students to pursue an MBA or a dental specialty area concurrently with the DMD.

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine dates back to 1868, originally called Boston Dental College before incorporating with the university in 1899. The autonomous dental program does not combine courses with medical students. Students without a bachelor's degree can gain admission to the program through a seven year joint degree program with the university's School of Arts & Sciences. The school considers the Canadian-administered DAT exam for admission. Students from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York may pursue a biology major and apply for a special eight-year early assurance program after the first semester of the freshman year. Tufts has a variety of dental-related student organizations on campus.

The specialized program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry allows students to earn a DMD and a Ph.D. in a biomedical science in six to seven years. Graduates of the DMD program can qualify for post-doctoral research and training through a sponsorship from the National Institute of Craniofacial and Dental Research (NIDCR). The dentistry school offers post-doctoral master's degrees in oral biology and clinical dentistry/dental materials. The Dental Academic Research Training (DART) program provides training and interdisciplinary research opportunities at four levels: short-term summer research for current dental students, a full research program for DMD/Ph.D. candidates, a pre-doctoral program and a post-doctoral program.
