Established in 1929, the California Maritime Academy is in the San Francisco area city of Vallejo in northern California. It is one of several maritime academies in the country. Cal Maritime's Bachelor of Science Marine Engineering Technology program is the only one of it's kind in California. The program offers a foundational education in all engineering aspects of working aboard commercial and military vessels. The four-year program combines engineering courses like Naval Architecture and Engineering Management with general education courses like Speech Communication and College Algebra. Students in Cal Maritime's Marine Engineering Technology program must also complete a training cruise around the Pacific Ocean as part of the program's requirements.

Founded in 1845, the United States Naval Academy offers undergraduate baccalaureate programs in six divisions. USNA's Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is housed within the academy's Division of Engineering and Weapons. Ship Structures, Coastal Engineering and Analytical Applications in Ship Design are just a sampling of the courses in the Bachelor of Science curriculum. Students actively engage in research projects and activities. They have participated in research sponsored by government agencies like the U.S. Coast Guard and the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Upon completion of the program's requirements, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering graduates will be easily accepted into most Navy or Marine Corps communities, or in selective technical communities like the Civil Engineering Corps.

The Webb Institute is in the Long Island, New York, city of Glen Cove. A private maritime college, the institute was established in 1889. Webb's four-year Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is the college's only program of study. The program's comprehensive curriculum includes courses in naval architecture, marine engineering, science and electrical engineering and in other related areas. Located on the Long Island Sound estuary, Webb's laboratories and other facilities help undergraduate naval engineering students study the field in both theory and in practice. A ship model towing tank, marine engineering lab and machine and woodworking shops are just a few of the resources available to students at Webb. Only 90 students are admitted to the college each year. Each of them receive full-tuition scholarships.
