The University of Texas in Austin offers several engineering programs, including two graduate programs in reservoir engineering. The Master of Science in petroleum engineering coursework includes basic engineering, drilling, reservoir engineering, petroleum engineering and a few other specialized classes in select fields. To pursue this degree, students must have completed some type of petroleum engineering degree, training or course. The Doctor of Philosophy in Petroleum Engineering allows students to further specialize in certain fields, including reservoir engineering. Students are able to learn hands-on in a 40,000-square-foot laboratory and a machine shop.

Phoenix Reservoir Engineering offers reservoir engineering training to industry professionals via virtual courses. The two main courses are well test design and analysis and gas reservoir management. These courses generally run between three and seven days. Other courses that have been offered include the following: analysis and development of tight gas reservoirs, reservoir engineering review, advanced production data analysis and nodal analysis, and geology, reservoir engineering and well test interpretation.

The Imperial College London offers short-term courses in petroleum and reservoir engineering. These courses run from a half day to up to three days. These courses are geared towards industry professionals who are looking to expand their knowledge, or those in a related field who wish to learn more about the oil and gas business. While each course can be applied towards a Master of Science degree in petroleum engineering, the course is broken up into individual modules offered several times a year so that professionals are able to fit in classes around work schedules. Coursework involves studying the definition of reservoir engineering, including characterization, management in the field and simulating the reservoir. Other coursework includes data analysis, process integration, well performance, reservoir performance and health and safety issues.
