Optical Engineering Schools

Optical engineers harness the power of light and use it for telescopes, lasers and fiber optic communication systems. Optical engineers study light and electronics using computers with optical software. A career in optical engineering requires specialized education, beginning at the bachelor's level and continuing with additional study that may lead to a doctorate in the field. Universities across the country offer optical engineering programs.
  1. North Dakota State University

    • Students just beginning their coursework in optical engineering may enroll in the bachelor's degree program at North Dakota State University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The four-year program includes classes in signals and systems, random processes, differential equations, design, applied electromagnetics, electronics, circuit analysis, basic linear algebra, electrical engineering and computing. Core classes such as skills for academic success, behavioral science and public speaking are also required. Students who wish to take their education further may enroll in the school's master of science or Ph.D. program in optical engineering.

A high school diploma is required for admission. North Dakota State University recommends that high school students interested in the program take physics, chemistry and math. Students without this prior coursework may require additional classes during their program.

    Colorado State University

    • The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Colorado State University offers a concentration in laser and optical engineering in its four-year bachelor's program. Students complete coursework in electronics principles, optics and waves, linear systems analysis, Fourier optics, optical electronics, quantum mechanics, differential equations, electromagnetic fields and devices, and calculus. General classes including college composition, historical perspectives and general chemistry are also required. Students may participate in engineering-related clubs such as the Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and Eta Kappa Nu, a national engineering honor society.

Applicants must have a high school diploma and submit ACT or SAT scores. Colorado State gives priority consideration to students with at least a 3.25 grade point average. The school also considers letters of recommendation, an essay, community service, compelling circumstances and how the student may be able to contribute to a diverse campus.

    University of New Mexico

    • Take your studies in optical engineering to the highest rung on the collegiate ladder through the University of New Mexico's Ph.D. program in optical science and engineering. Students divide their time between completing a research dissertation (and defense) and classroom learning, with required courses in advanced optics, laser physics, nonlinear optics, methods in theoretical physics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and semiconductor properties. Electives include condensed matter, optical communication concepts, guided wave optics and semiconductor lasers. Ph.D. candidates sit for a qualifying exam, which covers lasers, general optics, electromagnetics and advanced optics.

Candidates require general Graduate Record Examination scores, a letter of intent, at least three letters of recommendation and a transcript showing undergraduate or master's level course work in engineering, optics or a related field.
