List of Universities in Hawaii

Students who wish to study for bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees in Hawaii have four nationally accredited universities from which to choose. While most institutions are located in or near Honolulu, the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University both have branch campuses in other locations. Students can choose to attend schools in the state university system or may pursue degrees from private colleges.
  1. University of Hawaii

    • The University of Hawaii system is composed of three 4-year universities: the main campus at Manoa and campuses in Hilo and West Oahu. The three campuses have a combined total enrollment of over 25,000 students. The Manoa campus offers 290 programs spanning the gamut from bachelor’s degrees and certificate programs to doctoral degrees. The Hilo campus offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, while the West Oahu campus is strictly a baccalaureate institution. The system also includes seven community colleges.

    Brigham Young University-Hawaii

    • Brigham Young University-Hawaii is located near Honolulu in Laie. Operated by the Church of Latter Day Saints, BYU-Hawaii enrolls 2500 students from 70 countries in undergraduate programs ranging from business to exercise and sport science. Students at BYU-Hawaii are expected to obey an academic honor code and a dress code that mandates modesty and neatness.

    Chaminade University

    • Chaminade University is a Catholic university located in Honolulu. The enrollment of just over 2600 students allows for small class sizes--18 students on average--and a student-to-faculty ratio of 12 to 1. Students at Chaminade can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in subjects related to behavioral sciences, business, humanities, science and teaching.

    Hawaii Pacific University

    • The largest private university in Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific University offers 11 graduate degrees and over 50 undergraduate concentrations. HPU enrolls students from over 100 countries, making the campus one of the most diverse in the world. Students take courses at the downtown Honolulu campus, the Loa campus or at the Oceanic Institute in Waimanalo.
