List of Universities in Uganda

Within Uganda, once students complete their A-level courses, they can apply to attend one of Uganda’s public or private universities. StateUniversity.com states that for Ugandan students, college costs are covered by the government, including room and board and transportation. As of 2010, international students attending universities in Uganda pay around $6,000 a year. Completing a bachelor’s program takes about three years. Some universities offer certificate courses, which take one year, and two-year diploma courses.
  1. Makerere University

    • Makerere University began its history as a technical school in 1922, making it one of the oldest universities in Africa. The school changed to a university college with affiliations with the University College of London in 1949. In 1970, Makerere became an independent university.

      As of 2010, the student body consists of around 37,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The school has 10 different faculties, plus one college, five schools and six institutes associated with it. Undergraduate students interested in attending Makerere choose from areas of study such as agriculture, arts, science, technology and public health. For graduates, master's programs are available in agriculture, arts, computing and IT, veterinary medicine and technology.

    Gulu University

    • In October 2002, the Ugandan government opened Gulu University, located in northern Uganda. The university has five faculties and two institutes available. Gulu University’s faculties are divided into Agriculture and Environment, Business and Development Studies, Education and Humanities, Medicine and Science. The two institutes at the school are Peace and Strategic Studies and Research and Graduate Studies.

    Mountains of the Moon University

    • Mountains of the Moon University was conceived in 2002, then opened officially in August 2005. The school is one of the first within its region of Uganda. This university offers five different faculties for students: Business Management, Information and Computing Technology, Education, Horticulture and Public Health. In addition, there are a few post-graduate studies available as well. Post-graduate areas of study include business administration and public administration. The school also offers diplomas and certificates in public administration, computer science, business management and other areas.

    Kampala International University

    • Founded in October 2001, Kampala International University is one of the leading private universities in Uganda. Several faculties and schools make up Kampala International University. Students can enroll in faculties such as Medicine and Dentistry, Biomedical Sciences, Law or Social Science. Schools on campus include Economics and Applied Statistics, Business and Management and Computer Studies. The university also features a program known as ACCESS, in which students who are lacking a high school certificate level but are qualified to enroll in the university can take classes prior to enrollment.
