Boston, Massachusetts is among the oldest cities in the United States, with a history which dates back to 1630. An economic and cultural center of the New England region, Boston has more than 500,000 residents, numerous cultural organizations, hospitals and historic neighborhoods. It is also home to several universities including Boston University, Northeastern University, Harvard University and University of Massachusetts Boston.

    • Boston University is a private university which first opened in 1869. The campus encompasses 133 acres and is situated along the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. BU offers over 250 degree programs for undergraduates, graduates and professionals and boasts an average class size of 27. More than 32,000 students attend the university, 16,340 of whom are undergraduates. The student to faculty ratio is 13 to 1 and all of BU's faculty members are experts in their fields. Tuition for the 2010/2011 school year is $39,314.

    Northeastern University

    • Northeastern University is a private university situated in the center of Boston, Massachusetts. The University's history dates back to 1898, when it first opened. There are eight graduate schools, six undergraduate colleges and two part-time divisions. Northeastern University offers 80 different majors, several dual majors and 16 interdisciplinary majors. In 2009, there were 15,521 undergraduate students enrolled at Northeastern and more than 1,900 faculty members. Tuition for the 2010/2011 school year is $36,380.

    Harvard University

    • Harvard University, located in nearby Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a private Ivy League university. Harvard was founded in 1636 and is the oldest college in the United States. It also boasts one of the highest graduation rates in the country; Harvard has a 97 percent graduation rate. Harvard offers more than 3,500 academic courses as well as study-abroad programs and research opportunities. There are over 2,000 faculty members, including many renowned scholars and award winners. Tuition for the 2009/2010 school year was $33,696.

    UMass Boston

    • The University of Massachusetts Boston, located on the Columbia Point peninsula, is the only public university located in Boston, Massachusetts. The University was founded in 1863 as an Agricultural College. It has since changed names and, in 1982, the school merged with Boston State College. There are over 14,000 students and more than 150 academic programs. Undergraduate tuition for the spring 2010 semester was $6,126.50 for residents of Massachusetts and $12,219.50 for non-residents.
