Founded in 1891, Stanford is a large research university in northern California. Less than half of the institution's 15,000 students are undergraduates; nonetheless, Stanford undergraduate instruction ranked fourth overall in the 2010 "U.S. News & World Report" rankings. This is due, in part, to the school's low student-to-faculty ratio: 6.4 to 1 as of 2010.
