Top U.S. Undergraduate Colleges

Every year, publications such as the Wall Street Journal, "BusinessWeek" and "U.S. News & World Report" publish lists of the best universities in the country. But these rankings are not always synonymous with the best programs for undergraduates. Increasingly, quality undergraduate education comes from lesser-known schools that are better able to focus on their four-year programs. Students just starting college need to examine these schools to find the best institution for their undergraduate education.
  1. Dartmouth College

    • Dartmouth is a private, New Hampshire-based liberal arts college. Unlike most of the other Ivy League schools, Dartmouth confers the majority of its degrees in undergraduate programs. Six-thousand students attended Dartmouth in 2009, including nearly 4,200 undergraduates. Notable Dartmouth alumni include Nelson Rockefeller and Salmon P. Chase.

    • Notre Dame is a Catholic research university founded in 1842. An all-male institution for more than 100 years, Notre Dame became a coeducational school in 1972. Women now make up 47 percent of the student body at Notre Dame.

The majority of Notre Dame's nearly 12,000 students are undergraduates, pursuing degrees in fields such as architecture, liberal arts, science, engineering and business.

    Stanford University

    • Founded in 1891, Stanford is a large research university in northern California. Less than half of the institution's 15,000 students are undergraduates; nonetheless, Stanford undergraduate instruction ranked fourth overall in the 2010 "U.S. News & World Report" rankings. This is due, in part, to the school's low student-to-faculty ratio: 6.4 to 1 as of 2010.
