Top Undergraduate Biology Colleges

Biology is the study of living organisms as they relate to their environment and there are many sub-specialties within the field. It is important to research the type of career track you would like to take to narrow your choices for undergraduate colleges. There are hundreds of undergraduate schools that offer degrees in biology. Some are known for labs, professors or pre-med tracks. Perspective students should inquire into the college's labs and specializations. There are some colleges with highly respected biology programs that perspective students should look into.
  1. University of Chicago

    • The University of Chicago, a four year private institution, ranks just behind Stanford University for biology programs according to the 2010 report of best undergraduate schools by the U.S. News and World Report (See references 2, 4, and 5). UChicago has a strong and highly respected biology program with a pre-med focus that is highly integrated with the entire university, including its medical school and law school. Undergraduates have the opportunity to complete joint degrees (See reference 4).

    Stanford

    • Stanford University is in northern California between San Francisco and San Jose and offers four-year biology degree programs. A 2010 report by U.S. News and World Report ranked Stanford fourth in the nation in best universities overall (See reference 3). Its biology program offers several options within the field and is well known as one of the top education centers in the U.S. Stanford is also the site of extensive research and a highly respected medical school.

    University of Washington

    • The University of Washington is located in Seattle and offers two options for undergraduate biology majors. UW is well known for having an excellent biology department as well as offering flexibility. Bachelor of Arts degrees in biology are available and less specialized, therefore allowing students to choose from a wide variety of upper division electives. Students wishing to be more specific can opt for the Bachelor of Science degree and specialize more within the field (See resource)
