The Yale Department of Astronomy offers undergraduate and graduate degree paths in astronomy. The school's undergraduate program is grounded in coursework related to the fundamentals of physics and mathematics. A specialized program of study is developed on an individualized basis in a student's junior year, and includes lectures in mechanical design, planetary physics and astrophysics. Advanced graduate-level coursework includes extragalactic astronomy, star formation and stellar astrophysics.

Instruction in astronomy was first taught at Columbia University in 1757. Since then their undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs have yielded groundbreaking research and have grown to include the entire gamut of related study, from advanced mathematical theory to astrophysics. Undergraduate majors are available in astronomy and astrophysics, and include coursework surveying thermal dynamics, accelerated physics and quantum waves. Master of philosophy in astronomy and master of arts in astronomy degree paths are also offered at the institution.
