Manila is home to the “University Belt,” the popular name of a de facto sub-district in the city of Manila that refers to the educational area where there is a high concentration of colleges and universities. A number of these learning institutions have high rankings according to many rating agencies of colleges and universities all over the world.

    • According to the school's official website and duly acknowledged by many print, web and audio-visual materials including the addressing of house bills by the legislative body of the Philippine government, the University of the Philippines (UP) is the premiere state university of the country. UP Manila, one of the seven constituent universities of the UP System, is specifically recognized as the Philippines' leading university in the health sciences.     • According to the university’s website and as recognized by many sources including newspapers such as the Manila Bulletin and websites such as travel.yahoo.com and topuniversities.com, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the “Oldest Existing University in Asia.” Moreover, it is acknowledged as the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus in terms of student population. Founded in 1611, it has evolved as a top health science and liberal arts institution with a consistent presence in the yearly board examinations' best performing schools.
