According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, social workers help people cope and solve issues going on in their lives. Social workers commonly help people that have disabilities, family problems, life-threatening diseases and social problems, including housing, unemployment and substance abuse problems. Texas offers social work programs at universities in all areas of the state. According to Salary.com, the average yearly salary for social workers in Texas was about $45,000 as of April 2010.

    • The University of Texas at Austin is a public state university located in Austin, just north of San Antonio. UT's School of Social Work offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs that are all fully accredited. The bachelor's degree program is a 125-credit-hour degree program that includes 30 hours of course work in human behavior, practice, research and policy. It takes about two years to complete this program. Additionally, a 480-hour internship of fieldwork in a social services agency is required. The master's degree program is a 60-credit-hour program that offers two career path program choices: clinical social work or community and administrative leadership. Depending on which path you choose, it can take from 1.5 to three years to graduate with a master's degree. The doctoral program is 46 credit hours, excluding dissertation. The doctoral program places an emphasis on research and presents opportunities to teach in the School of Social Work.

    Baylor University

    • Baylor University is located just west of Houston in Waco. Baylor is a private Baptist university that has a fully accredited social work program. Baylor offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees that lead to careers in a variety of social work fields. According to Baylor's School of Social Work website, the undergraduate degree program covers social work methods, skills and techniques, theories of behavioral development, social policies and research for social work practice. The program includes a 480-hour internship. The master's degree program offers three degree options: children and families, physical and mental health and community practice. The graduate program is designed to build upon the concepts learned in the undergraduate program and prepare students to work as social work clinicians, counselors, program planners, administrators or community developers. The Ph.D. program is designed to develop research skills and prepare students to contribute to theory, model and skill development to the social work field. Generally it takes three to four years to complete the 60 credit hours of the Ph.D. program.

    West Texas A&M University

    • West Texas A&M University is located in northwest Texas in Canyon, approximately fifteen miles south of Amarillo. WTAM is a public university that offers two fully accredited social work programs. The bachelor's degree program is 54 credit hours of upper level courses and takes about two years to complete. Some of the classes in this program are introduction to social work, structure and process of social welfare, social policy and planning, and social work methods. WTAM also offers a graduate degree in social work program. This program is designed to build upon the concepts learned in undergraduate courses and leads to a master's degree in social work. The master's degree program was approved and added to the university's offerings beginning in fall 2010.
