School Social Worker Programs

To become a school social worker, a master's degree in social work is required. The degree must be earned from a university accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. States have different requirements for licensing, certification and registration as a school social worker. In most states, candidates must complete two years of coursework or 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience. According to 2010 figures from Indeed.com, the average annual salary for school social workers is $59,000.

This is a two-year program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The University of Texas at Austin's program earned a sixth-place ranking from "U.S News and World Report" in 2008. Students are required to complete 60 semester hours and 1,020 hours of field practice to graduate. This program offers concentration areas in clinical social work and community and administrative leadership. A field practicum places the students in a social service agency where they are supervised by a master's level social worker.

USC offers an accredited master's degree program in social work with concentrations that will lead to a career as a school social worker. Students are required to complete 63 credit hours and 1,050 field instruction hours. The coursework consists of foundation courses, concentration courses and field experiences. The first year of foundation coursework includes classes in human behavior and the social environment, social policy and social work practice with individuals and families. During the second year, students can choose from five different concentrations. The concentration in families and children offers courses that include social work practice in school settings. At the end of the program, a field internship will be assigned to each student. "U.S. News and World Report" listed USC as the eighth-best social work graduate program in its 2008 rankings.
