Social Work PhD Programs

A Ph.D. in social work often follows a Master's in Social Work (MSW) or related degree for students who wish to pursue a career in academia or research. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of 2009 there were 74 doctoral programs in social work in the United States. Overall the field will continue to grow, due in part to an aging population, notes the BLS.
  1. Columbia University School of Social Work

    • In 2008, "U.S. News and World Report" ranked Columbia University's graduate School of Social Work fourth in the nation. Originated in 1950, Columbia's Ph.D. program in social work is highly regarded and highly competitive. While Columbia does not require a minimum score on the GRE, the school does note that "the number of quality applications invariably exceeds the number of available spots that we have in the incoming cohort, and our applicant pool has become increasingly competitive over the last several years." Columbia notes that students will leave the program with a sound understanding of social work history and theory as well as aptitude in research. Program graduate Jared Bernstein was named executive director of the newly formed White House Task Force on Middle Class Working Families in February 2009.
