The University of Michigan's Social Work Ph.D. program is ranked number two on the "U.S. News & World Report" list and number three in the 2010 Gourman rankings. U of M awards its doctoral students a joint degree. Students choose among five areas of social science: psychology, sociology, political science, anthropology or economics. A dual Ph.D. in both the chosen discipline and social work is awarded upon completion of the program. Begun in 1957, this joint Ph.D. program is dedicated to providing students with a diverse curriculum, allowing them the freedom to be trained in several disciplines of social work.
