Catholic PhD Programs

As of 2010, the U.S. has 230 Catholic colleges and universities, according to the National Catholic College Admission Association. A few of these schools offer Ph.D. programs in the areas of theology, the history of Christianity, world religions and apologetics. These programs are designed for students seeking employment as professors in religious teaching or ministry directors.
  1. University of Notre Dame

    • The Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, offers students a 42-credit doctoral program in theology. The program has concentrations in six areas of theology for the student to choose from: the history of Christianity, Christianity and Judaism in antiquity, moral theology and Christian ethics, liturgical studies, world religions, world church and systematic theology. According to the Notre Dame Department of Theology, the program may take as long as 5 years to complete and will at minimum take the average student a total of 4 years.

    Marquette University

    • Marquette University's Department of Theology, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, features a 60-semester hour Doctor of Philosophy program in theology. The program offers students four concentrations: historical theology, Judaism and Christianity in antiquity, systematic theology and theology and society, for students concentrating on more than one discipline within theology. Candidates for the Ph.D. program are required to be proficient in both German and French, and pass the program's entrance exam. Once admitted into the doctorate program, students must defend their doctorate dissertation successfully to the theology department's Committee on Graduate Studies, prior to the program's completion.

    Boston College

    • The doctoral program in theology at Boston College consists of four concentrations, which include, systematic theology, history of Christian life and thought, theological ethics, comparative theology and Biblical studies. According to the Theology Department at Boston College, theology classes are taught by professors who have Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim and Catholic backgrounds. This is to give the courses comparative theologies to Christianity. Students, who have an extensive academic background in theology or religion, or both, may be admitted into the Ph.D. program with just a bachelor's degree. Students must pass two or more language examinations and admission examinations before admission into the program.
