Texas State University was established in 1899. The online masters of social work (MSW) program is offered part-time and students must take 62 credit-hours to graduate. The college accepts students who have obtained a bachelor in social work (BSW) degree or any other discipline. However, only students with a BSW are eligible to take advanced standing courses. Students are also required to engage in field courses. MSW courses include: Advanced Social Policy and Social Justice, Advanced Direct Practice with Families and Advanced Social Work Research. Prospective students must complete two applications for admission; one to the graduate college and another to the school of social work. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid and loans; scholarships are available as well.

The University of New England offers an accredited online program leading to a masters of social work degree. Part of the school's mission is to prepare students to engage in courses focused in "human rights and social and economic justice." Students with a bachelor's degree in social work are able to apply for advanced standing. Students without a social work background take the traditional pathway and must take prerequisite courses. The traditional pathway can be completed in four years, whereas the advanced standing students may complete their degree in two years. The school offers three start dates each year. Cost-effective tuition installment plans are available. Students are also able to secure federal funding and graduate students have the option to apply for Grad Plus Loans.

Students who have a BSW can graduate in two years. However, those who have a bachelor's degree in any other discipline can finish their degree in three years. The University offers courses completely online, but students must make two campus visits. Students have an option of taking a thesis or non-thesis pathway.
