Universities in Texas With Dental Hygiene Programs

Dental hygienists clean teeth and gums, take X-rays, educate patients on oral hygiene and help dentists diagnose and treat diseases of the mouth. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, dental hygiene is one of the fastest-growing occupations across the country, and Texas is no exception. With 21 accredited dental hygiene schools in the state, Texas is serious about the future of dental hygiene.
  1. Amarillo College

    • Amarillo College, located in Amarillo, requires at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) for admittance into the program. With less than 50 spots, competition is fierce. Approximately 50 applicants are chosen for an interview and aptitude testing every April. If you earn enough points during this process, you will be placed on the fall roster.

    Austin Community College

    • Austin Community College (ACC) has several satellite locations across Austin and the surrounding area. The dental hygiene program, located on the Eastview Campus, requires at least 2.0 GPA in general coursework. However, according to the ACC Dental Hygiene website, a competitive GPA is 3.5. Students who are admitted into the program must undergo a criminal background check and submit proof of CPR certification.

    El Paso Community College

    • El Paso Community College has several satellite locations around El Paso that offer a dental hygiene program. Admission is competitive, and you must pass each course with a grade of C or better. Not included in the tuition are uniform costs and transportation to clinical sites.

    Temple College

    • Temple College, located in Temple, says its students' scores are consistently among the highest on the National Board Examination (NAB). Before applying to Temple, students should pass two exams (Texas Higher Education Skills Assessment and Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test) and take biology and anatomy courses.
