University of Manitoba School of Dental Hygiene has a two-year program that results in a Diploma in Dental Hygiene. During the first year, students will study basic, clinical, behavioral and dental sciences. Coursework includes oral and dental anatomy, microbiology, radiology, dental materials and hygiene theory and practice. Second-year classes include nutrition, pathology, pharmacology, pain management and periodontology. Program instruction includes classroom lectures and seminars, lab and clinical teaching, and small group discussion. It also includes fieldwork such as going into the community to give oral health care lessons to elementary school children and providing dental care to low income groups. Program instructors include dental hygiene and education teachers, researchers and scientists.

The Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene has an 18-month program for dental hygiene. It is divided into three levels, each of them 22 weeks long, which focus on dental theory and technique. Students will study courses in psychology, biology, community dental health, dental hygiene practice and professional classes such as time management. Dental science courses will include pain and anxiety control, the theory and practice of radiology, orofacial histology, tooth morphology, and head and neck anatomy. Graduates will be able to assess and evaluate patients, and plan proper dental hygiene care. Instructors include dental hygienists, dentists and other dental health care professionals.

Canadian National Institute of Health (CNIH) offers a dental hygiene program which is designed to train students to provide comprehensive care focusing on the dental patient. Students will learn scientific, clinical and professional skills to be able to evaluate, plan and implement quality care. The program takes three terms to complete. First-term courses include anatomy and physiology, microbiology and dental anatomy, materials, lab and terminology. In the second term students will study radiographic interpretation, periodontics and oral histology, pathology and embryology. The final term includes classes such as orthodontics and dental hygiene practice and principles. In addition to classroom and lab studies, students will get on-the-job experience working in the CNIH Dental Hygiene Clinic.
