List of Colleges With Dental Hygiene Programs in Ohio

To enter the dental hygiene field, individuals need education beyond a high diploma. Although a certificate or master's degree is ideal, an associate degree is the minimum education required to practice. An associate degree program includes a combination of laboratory, clinical work and classroom instruction. Dental hygienist students take classes in pharmacology, nutrition and physiology. In Ohio, there are approximately 12 dental hygiene program.
  1. Stark State College of Technology

    • Stark State is the largest technical college in Ohio. Approximately, 90 percent of its graduates find employment upon completing their programs, according to the college. The community college has more than 200 associate degree and certificate programs.

      Its dental hygiene program features an on-campus dental hygiene clinic. Under supervision, students provide patient care, develop their skills and obtain experience.
      Besides, the hands-on experience classroom instruction is also included. In the first semester, students enroll in pre-application courses called a semester of eligibility. However, the program consists of four additional semesters and one required summer session.

    Cuyahoga Community College

    • Opened in 1963, the Cuyahoga Community College is the first and largest community college in Ohio. The college has about 140 academic programs and approximately 83 percent of graduates find employment within their chosen degree field upon graduation.

      The Cuyahoga Community College's dental hygiene program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Graduates of the program are able diagnose problems, provide appropriate dental treatment and make critical decisions regarding patient care.

    Youngstown State University

    • Youngstown State University is located close to Cleveland, Akron and Pittsburg. It offers approximately 100 undergraduate majors and 35 advanced degree programs.

      The Youngstown State dental hygiene program takes five semesters to complete. The curriculum includes work outside the classroom where the university arranges for the dental hygiene students to provide their services in regional dental clinics and area schools.
