Community Colleges for Dental Hygiene

The United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment for dental hygienists is anticipated to grow at a rate of 36 percent through 2018. Dental community colleges provide students focused training in programs that allow them to earn their degree and gain employment in the health care field within two years.
  1. Pima Community College

    • Founded in 1969, Pima Community College offers a Dental Hygienist Associate degree. Students must complete courses like algebra, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, computer fundamentals and computer literacy before they graduate from the program. Preventive dentistry and nutrition, oral pathology, pharmacology, psychology, anxiety control and oral embryology are other courses required for graduation. The Associate degree prepares students to take state, national and regional dental license examinations, including the National Board Examination, so that they can work for clinics, hospitals, schools and other government agencies. Part-time and full-time programs are available. Financial Aid is available through grants and student loans. Pima Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.

    Baltimore City Community College

    • Baltimore City Community College was founded in 1947. As of 2010, approximately 22,000 students were enrolled at the community college. The college offers an Associate Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. The two-year program covers areas such as preventative oral health care, pain and anxiety control, examination techniques, dental instruments, human anatomy and radiology. Upon graduation students can work at hospitals, clinics, military facilities and schools. Financial aid is available through scholarships, grants, student loans and work study programs. Baltimore City Community College is accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
