Established in 1868, the University of California-Berkeley's College of Engineering features several departments offering varying specializations in the field at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Among the most notable offerings is the Engineering Science Program, which exposes undergraduates to multiple facets of the field through intensive interdisciplinary study. Students matriculating into the program choose from four majors: computational engineering science, engineering mathematics and statistics, engineering physics and environmental engineering science. The college hosts more than two dozen research centers and institutes, led by renowned faculty members who include Nobel laureates.

The Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Engineering has its roots in a mechanical engineering baccalaureate program established in 1888. Today the college hosts several departments, each of which offers various undergraduate and graduate degree programs in engineering specializations such as polymer, textile, computer and aerospace engineering. Georgia Tech's more than 60 interdisciplinary centers include four National Centers of Excellence. Georgia Tech engineering students also have opportunities to study abroad in France, Australia, China and Switzerland, and take part in a summer program at England's Oxford University.

The University of Illinois' College of Engineering is one of the world's largest engineering schools, featuring more than 1,500 degree programs. Like many prominent engineering schools, U of I has an active research base and features dozens of research centers and laboratories, in addition to research conducted within individual college departments. Students can choose undergraduate and graduate courses of study in a variety of engineering disciplines from aerospace and agricultural engineering to materials science and nuclear engineering.
