Mathematical Finance Schools

The field of mathematical finance, also called computational finance or financial mathematics, combines the disciplines of statistics, computer science, economic theory and mathematics. Financial companies such as banks, insurance companies and corporate treasuries hire individuals with these backgrounds to conduct practices like risk management and portfolio structuring. University programs in mathematical finance are frequently offered at the master's degree level.
  1. New York University

    • The Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University (NYU) offers a financial mathematics program with five tracks. The M.S. degree is offered on a part-time or full-time basis, in addition to a dual M.B.A./M.S. option. Part-time students usually complete the M.S. in three to five years, while full-time students take four classes per semester for three semesters. The M.B.A./M.S. track provides a dual degree--Master in Business Administration and Master of Science--and takes three years to complete. An advanced certificate option consists of four to eight courses designed for working professionals to enhance their education in the field. The non-degree study track includes four courses that count toward a degree program prior to enrollment. Graduates of the mathematical finance program have been placed in well-known companies like JPMorgan Chase, Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs.

    Purdue University

    • Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., offers four degree programs in computational finance. These include two Master of Science degrees, one in mathematics and one in statistics, both with concentrations in computational finance. Purdue also provides a Master of Business Administration degree and a Ph.D. option with concentrations in computational finance. These programs are offered within the mathematics, statistics and management departments and prepare students for careers in the financial industry.

    University of Southern California

    • The University of Southern California offers a Master of Science degree program in mathematical finance. The program combines the disciplines of economics, econometrics or statistics, mathematics and numerical or computational analysis. It is designed for undergraduate degree recipients in the fields of engineering, applied mathematics, business, economics or physics. Typically it takes full-time students between 12 and 18 months to complete the program. Students are required to complete a master's thesis project and a summer internship.
