Banking & Finance Schools

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the banking, finance and insurance industry will grow by 5 percent through 2018, resulting in the creation of more than 321,000 new jobs. A number of private and public colleges in the United States offer degree programs in banking and finance. These programs are designed to prepare students for entry into a variety of jobs related to the industry, including financial advising and analysis, management, commercial lending and entrepreneurship.
  1. University of Georgia

    • Located in a rural area 60 miles from Atlanta, the University of Georgia is a public institution with a combined enrollment of 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Students interested in pursuing the bachelor's degree in finance program offered by the university's Terry College of Business spend two years completing prerequisite and general education courses in English, mathematics, foreign languages, humanities and social sciences. Those who receive admission to the program then take courses in marketing, management, information systems, corporate finance theory and investments. Internships are available for interested students, and students are encouraged to complete courses in economics, employment and business law, real estate and risk management. Approximately one-third of all students receive some type of financial aid while attending the university, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges.Graduate-level degrees are also offered in banking and finance.

    St. Bonaventure University

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded St. Bonaventure University in 1858 in St. Bonaventure, N..Y., a small town 70 miles from Buffalo. The college is home to more than 2,400 students and grants a bachelor of business administration degree in finance. Among the courses required for the major are econometrics, money and banking, investments, reporting, financial and managerial accounting, business law, marketing, business information systems, finite mathematics, statistics and computer science. Students in the major have the option to join in a program called Student Money Management, which allows participants to invest a real sum of money in an investment fund and monitor its performance. Internships also are available in finance and in banking. In addition to federal and state financial-aid programs, the university grants a number of institutional scholarships and grants to students. Also offered is master's of business administration program that allows for full-time, part-time or weekend-only study in finance.

    La Sierra University

    • Affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, La Sierra University is in Riverside, Calif., a suburban area 40 miles from Los Angeles. Among the programs available to the university's more than 1,400 undergraduate students is a bachelor's of science in finance. All students in the program take classes in accounting, word languages, globalization, economics, statistics, management, business law, and moral aspects of business. Religious studies courses are also required for graduation. Study-abroad opportunities are available. Around 93 percent of freshmen and 98 percent of continuing students at La Sierra benefit from some type of financial aid while studying at the university, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The college also offers a master of business administration degree in finance.
