Art Programs in Ohio

Ohio is home to several highly rated graduate art programs, including those at three schools ranked among the nation's top 50 fine-arts graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report magazine. Ohio's public universities and private arts colleges offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of two-dimensional, three-dimensional and new-media studio disciplines.
  1. Ohio State University

    • The art department within Ohio State University's College of the Arts offers undergraduate and graduate-degree programs. Undergraduate students begin as bachelor of arts candidates and can go through a portfolio review to enter the bachelor of fine arts program. BFA students can concentrate in art and technology, ceramics, glass, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking or sculpture. The department also offers two-year master of fine arts programs in the same seven studio fields. Ohio State University tied for 21st in the U.S. News & World Report ranking of fine arts graduate schools.

    University of Cincinnati

    • The school of art within the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning offers a variety of degree programs. Undergraduates can work toward a bachelor of art degree in art history or a bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography or electronic arts. All undergraduates must complete an interdisciplinary studies program before selecting a concentration. Graduate students can work toward a master of arts degree in art history or art education or a master of fine arts degree with a concentration in one of seven fields, including two-dimensional, three-dimensional and media art disciplines. The University of Cincinnati tied for 45th place in the U.S. News & World Report ranking.

    Cleveland Institute of Art

    • The Cleveland Institute of Art, a private art college, was founded in 1882. As of 2009, the school had about 500 undergraduate students. The school offers bachelor of fine arts degrees in 16 studio disciplines: biomedical art, ceramics, drawing, enameling, fibers, glass, illustration, jewelry and metals, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, digital arts and industrial, communication and interior design. Students can complete two majors or a major and a minor. The school also offers continuing education and community outreach programs. The Cleveland Institute of Art tied for 50th in U.S. News & World Report ranking.
