Physician Assistant Graduate Schools

Physician assistant job opportunities are expected to grow 39 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Physician assistants are highly-trained medical professionals that are responsible for various aspects of patient care, from prescribing medication to performing surgeries.     • University of Wisconsin-Madison is located in Madison, Wisconsin. UW-M's graduate physician assistant program is offered as either a two (campus-based) or three-year program (distanced-based). Students partake in courses such as human anatomy, physical examination, women's health, pharmacology, surgery and emergency medicine. Students interested in UW-M's PA program should have a bachelor's degree, a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and prerequisites in biology, chemistry, microbiology, psychology and statistics. Students should begin applying in September to start the following summer. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

    Oregon Health and Science University

    • Oregon Health and Science University is located in Portland, Oregon. This college's graduate physician assistant program is full-time and 26 months long. Courses include anatomy, pharmacology, emergency medicine, pediatrics, patient assessment and surgery, and others. New classes begin each June so students are encouraged to apply between April and November. To gain acceptance into the program, students need a bachelor's degree, a minimum GPA of 2.8, one year of full-time health care experience (or 2,000 hours), prerequisite courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy, psychology, microbiology and statistics, and GRE scores from within the past 5 years. Students can apply for financial aid.

    Emory University

    • Emory University is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Emory's 28-month, full-time graduate physician assistant program provides students with the training they need to work as PAs in a variety of medical settings and specialties. Emory's physician assistant program is divided into three sections of learning: didactic, clinical and advanced clinical. Students can complete their clinical phase in Georgia and in other various southeastern states. New classes start each May, so applicants should apply between October and February. To gain acceptance into the program, students need to have a bachelor's degree, prerequisite classes in sciences and mathematics and they need to pass a background and health check. Financial assistance is available to students who apply.
