Finance & Insurance Schools

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for insurance sales agents and financial analysts will grow from 14 to 20 percent from 2008 through 2018. To enter these and other careers in the finance and insurance industries, a minimum of a bachelor's degree is typically necessary. A number of private and public colleges and universities offer such degree programs.

    • Located in Muncie, Indiana, Ball State University is a public institution with more than 21,000 undergraduate and graduate students as of 2010. U.S. News and World Report ranked the school 179th among all universities in the United States in its Best Colleges 2011 ratings. The university's Miller College of Business grants Bachelor of Science degrees in both finance and insurance and risk management. In the finance major, students can specialize in business finance, financial planning and investments and financial analysis. The program provides students opportunities to participate in internships. The insurance major covers issues related to life and health insurance, personal and commercial insurance and laws and regulations that cover insurance.

    Northeastern University

    • Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a private, nonsectarian institution in Boston. Home to more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students, as of 2010, the college received the 69th-place ranking among all universities in the United States in the Best Colleges of 2011 rankings from U.S. News and World Report. The college offers a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and accounting management. The program is available in a traditional, four-year format or an accelerated, 18-month course of study for students who already hold an associate's or a bachelor's degree in a field other than finance. Students in the program complete coursework in business law, credit analysis, investment principles, economics, taxation, strategy and financial reporting.

    California State University, Northridge

    • Founded in 1958, California State University, Northridge, is a public institution with a combined enrollment of more than 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students, as of 2010. The school received the 77th-place ranking among universities in the Western region of the United States in the Best Colleges 2011 ratings from U.S. News and World Report. The college grants a Bachelor of Science in finance and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in financial services, which includes coursework in insurance. Both programs require students to take classes in accounting, economics, business statistics, communications, business law and operations and marketing management. The finance degree also has classes like investment analysis, taxation, ethics, futures and price theory required in the curriculum. Students in the financial services degree course of study take additional classes in wills and estates, risk management, financial planning and banking.
