Insurance Underwriting Schools

Insurance underwriters have the responsibility of evaluating insurance applications to determine acceptable risks. They also issue insurance and determine the premium amount. Insurance underwriters work in company headquarters or regional offices. Formal education is not required, but employers do prefer those with a bachelor’s degree or insurance-related work experience. As of 2004, the median salary for insurance underwriters was $48,550, according to the College Grad website.

    Walden University

    • With the Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) program, students can focus on a career in risk management. This program introduces insurance management through two courses: the Application of Finance course and the field study course. The field study course pairs students with a School of Management faculty member to focus on a career in insurance risk management such as insurance underwriting. The completion requirements for this program are foundation and core courses (24 semester credits), specialized courses and capstone (8 semester credits) courses (4 semester credits). Financial aid, fellowships, scholarships and other funding options are available to students who qualify.
