U.S. Engineering Schools

The United States offers many different engineering schools all across the country. In order to work as an engineer, students need to find the right engineering school to help build knowledge and skill in this highly specialized field. Engineering schools are located in many regions of the United States. Courses of study can range from basic business to complex scientific and nanotechnology disciplines.
  1. Stanford University

    • The Stanford Engineering School is located near Silicon Valley and houses approximately 65 labs and centers on campus. Students have access to research projects with internships and learning opportunities from some of the nation's most innovative companies. Programs range from materials science and engineering to aeronautics and astronautics studies, in addition to the cross-school programs such as the Stanford Design Program. Offered in connection with the School of Humanities and Sciences, this program offers multiple discipline research opportunities in the medical and biology fields.

    University of California at Berkeley

    • The University of California at Berkeley College of Engineering offers eight study areas including fields such as industrial engineering and operations research in addition to an applied science and technology program. There are around 40 research centers and institutes for students to participate in. The location is desirable, as students may live on campus with access to nearby San Francisco and California's many beach areas. Students also have the option of taking an accelerated one year, rather than the traditional two-year program. Graduate students must also complete two minors outside of the College of Engineering.

    Georgia Institute of Technology

    • Georgia Tech College of Engineering has nearly 20 specialization areas, from industrial and biomedical engineering to medical physics to aerospace studies. Students may choose to pursue a master's or doctorate degree in addition to dual programs with universities located out of the United States. For instance, students in the dual program in Electrical and Computer Engineering may study at a partner school, such as the Institut d'Electronique de Microelectronique et de Nanotechnologies in France or at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

    • The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign engineering program includes over 50 research centers and institutes, in which nearly $200 million has been spent on research projects. Some areas of study include biological, nuclear, agricultural, financial, plasma and radiological engineering. The school's campus Technology Entrepreneur Center assists students to become entrepreneurs and innovators with a chance toward a $30,000 annual prize. The school's Engineering Career Services Office also assists students with career placement in the job market after graduation.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Located in Cambridge, the long standing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Engineering has been in existence since 1861. Around 45 percent of all MIT graduate students comprise the engineering school with around a third of its faculty members teaching there. The engineering program offers 15 courses of study that have almost 20 campus research centers to explore diverse topics like soldier nanotechnologies, cancer research and oceanic studies. Engineering students with new business aspirations may apply and compete for its $100K Entrepreneurship Competition to win business start-up funding.
