BC Law Schools

Choosing a law school can be a challenging task. There are a number of factors to considers when making your decision such as cost, reputation, accreditation and areas of specialization offered by each school. Students planning to practice law in Canada have numerous choices available and the province of British Columbia provides students with two high-quality educational opportunities.
  1. University of British Columbia

    • Students attending the University of British Columbia's School of Law can rest assured that they will receive a high-quality legal education. The law school is considered to have one of the more innovative programs in the nation and allows students to pursue a wide range of studies that are largely a reflection of faculty research interests. Students can involve themselves in a variety of student organizations or important legal publications such as the UBC Law Review and the Canadian Journal of Family Law. In addition to the J.D. program, which prepares students for a career of law practice, the law school also offers innovative joint degrees such as the J.D./M.A. degree in Asia Pacific policy studies or the J.D./M.B.A. program. Students wanting to engage in legal research can pursue a Ph.D. in law.

    University of Victoria

    • The University of Victoria offers students in British Columbia the opportunity to pursue their law degree at another widely regarded institution of higher education. The university offers students the opportunity to obtain the LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws degree) or a Ph.D. in legal studies. The university does not currently offer the J.D. degree, a designation that some Canadian legal schools have switched to recently, with the University of Toronto being the first to do so in 2001. The university offers students the opportunity to pursue legal studies in the areas of business, criminal and environmental law, along with two other clinical programs that provide students with hands-on experience. The university also emphasizes four primary areas of research that include studies directed by the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives, Eco-Research Chair in Environmental Law and Policy, Institute for Dispute Resolution and the Demcon--Consortium on Democratic Constitutionalism.

    The People's Law School

    • Although there are only two actual law schools within the province of British Columbia, any discussion of law schools within BC would be incomplete without some mention of the People's Law School. The People's Law School is a nonprofit organization that was founded by law students in 1972. Originally the program provided education to people on legal matters living primarily in Vancouver, but the organization has, since then, spread its wings to educate people living in the interior areas of the province, even immigrant communities whose native language differed from the standard English spoken throughout BC. The People's Law School educates people regarding debtor protection, employment insurance, employment standards, family law, health care consent, landlord and tenant law, power of attorney, probating an estate, scams to avoid, starting a small business and writing a will.
