Minority Law Scholarships

Figuring out how to pay for law school can be challenging for any student. For minority students, there are a number of scholarships designed to help make it easier to pursue their educational and professional goals. These programs are intended to reduce the financial burden of paying for law school while also encouraging diversity in the legal profession.
  1. Sidney B. Williams Jr. Scholarship Program

    • The Sidney B. Williams Jr. Scholarship program awards $10,000 to minority students who plan to pursue a career in intellectual property law. Applicants must be a member of an underrepresented minority group attending a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. Recipients must become a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA while attending law school.

    Fredrikson & Byron Minority Scholarship

    • The law firm of Fredrikson and Byron offers one $10,000 scholarship annually to first-year minority law students. Any minority law student may apply; however, the firm gives preference to those students who plan to enter private practice in the upper midwest area after graduation.

    American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund

    • The ABA's Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund provides $5,000 scholarships to minority law students. Applicants must be entering their first year of law school and possess a 2.5 GPA. As part of the program, participating law schools are required to match the amount of the ABA award for recipients.

    Richard D. Hailey Law Student Scholarship

    • The Richard D. Hailey Law Student scholarship is awarded to African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American and biracial law students. To be eligible for the $1,000 award, applicants must be student members of the American Association for Justice and demonstrate an interest in public advocacy.

    Milbank Diversity Scholars Program

    • The Milbank Diversity Scholars Program offers minority law students the opportunity to earn $50,000 in scholarship money as well as a paid summer internship. Students receive $15,000 of the scholarship in their third year of law school and the remaining $35,000 is paid upon acceptance of employment at the Milbank law firm.

    MCCA Lloyd M. Johnson Jr. Scholarship Program

    • The Lloyd M. Johnson Jr. Scholarship is awarded to minority law students entering their first year of law school. Recipients of the award receive $10,000 for each year they are enrolled in law school, and a small number of students will receive a one-time award of $10,000 to cover first-year costs.

    Latham Diversity Scholars Program

    • The Latham Diversity Scholars Program is open to second-year minority law students who have an interest in pursuing a career in global law. Students receive the $10,000 award in their third year of law school and applicants may not have received a similar award from another law firm.
