Minority Scholarships for Athletes

Students who excel in athletics or want to pursue a career in the athletic field can find many scholarships to apply for. Minority athletes have access to specifically designed scholarships that address their minority status. These types of scholarships can be based either on merit or need.
  1. Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics

    • This $6,000 scholarship is open to minorities and women seeking post-graduate careers in athletics. It is designed to help students with a year of graduate studies at a National Collegiate Athletic Association member school. According to the NCAA's web site, to be eligible for this scholarship, students must have already been accepted into a sports administration program or another graduate program that will prepare them for careers in athletics. These programs include but are not limited to athletic administrator, athletic trainer and coach. Application for the Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for careers in Athletics can be filled out online at the NCAA web site. Applications require three recommendations and a transcript.

    NSCAF Minority Scholarship

    • The National Strength and Conditioning Association Foundation offers many scholarships for student athletes, all with the same general requirements: Students must provide their GPAs, courses taken, academic achievements, experience with strength and conditioning, involvement in the NSCA, community involvement, honors and awards, letters of recommendation and essays. The scholarship is open to all students ages 17 or older who qualify as minorities according to Bureau of Census requirements. Students must demonstrate that they have been accepted to NSCA-accredited schools to compete for the $1,500 scholarships.

    The Gene and John Scholarship

    • Students who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered (LGBT) are consider minorities and are therefore eligible for minority scholarships. The Stonewall Community Foundation offers scholarships to the LGBT students of New York. Athletes can apply to the Gene and John Athletic Fund of Stonewall for the Gene and John scholarship. Started in 2002 by Gene Silbert and John Kiley, this scholarship is for LGBT athletes seeking to further their education while continuing their athletic careers. Scholarships are offered in $2,500 and $5,000 denominations.
