Cosmetology Scholarships for Minority Students

Applying for scholarships and grants for cosmetology school can help reduce tuition costs. Some scholarships require a FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) to help determine the amount of financial need. Many schools will have a list of scholarships and grants available to students in the financial aid, counselor or payment office.
  1. AHBAI Scholarship for African Americans

    • The AHBAI is funded by Luster Products.

      The AHBAI Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation offers cosmetology scholarships ranging from $250 to $500 per person with a total of $5,000 awarded in prizes. Requirements include an 85 percent grade average, completion of at least 300 hours of class time, and be of African American decent.

    Joe Francis Foundation

    • Apply for more than one scholarship to increase your chances of receiving one.

      The Joe Francis Hair Care Foundation offers a $1,000 scholarship to students starting or are enrolled in a cosmetology school. Applications must include an essay and letters of recommendation. Applicants must graduate after Aug. 31 in the application year. The scholarship is open to all races with preference given to low income applicants.

    Sally Beauty Scholarship

    • When applying, read all the requirements to make sure you are eligible.

      The NCA Sally Beauty offers scholarships to high school students, people under the age of 26 wanting to enter a cosmetology school and to students already enrolled. High school students and people under 26 can apply for a $1,000 scholarship and currently enrolled students can apply for a $500 scholarship. Applicants must include a personal essay and two letters of reference, It is open to all potential applicants, preference is given to applicant most in need of the money.

    AACS Program

    • Make sure you fill out applications completely. Incomplete applications can be dismissed even if you are qualified.

      The Access to Cosmetology Education Scholarship Program is available to students attending a cosmetology school affiliated with the AACS. One applicant per school will receive a $1,000 scholarship. To qualify you must be half-way through the training course with an average attendance, grade rate of at least 80 percent, and prove financial need. To apply, speak to the school's student counselor or financial adviser for the application. A FAFSA application will also be required; it can be obtained at fafsa.ed.gov.

    B&H Grant

    • Don't overlook smaller scholarships.

      The Oregon Barber and Hairdresser (B&H) Grant Program is available to a licensed school of barbering, hair design, cosmetology or manicure in Oregon. The school must also participate in the Federal Title IV financial aid programs. Applicants must show financial need, be enrolled full time, and have finished at least 900 hours of class time, the equivalent of 9 months. Grants range from $100 to $1,500. To apply, contact the financial aid officer for the school and request an application for the B&H Grant.
