Scholarships for Minority Advertising Students

Although locating advertising scholarships for the general population is not a hard feat finding scholarships specifically aimed toward minority students is not always so easy. If you happen to be part of what is considered a demographic minority, there are many scholarships and grants out there for you if you know where to look.
  1. School-based Advertising Scholarships for Minorities

    • Wichita State University offers the Sullivan Higdon & Sink Inc. Minority Advertising Scholarship to cover the cost of, "books, tuition and fees, for an incoming minority student from Wichita."

      Western Kentucky University offers eleven awards to minority students through the Joseph A. Dear Memorial Scholarships. Each individual honoree receives $1,000 based on involvement in publications, aptitude and attitude and good scholastic standing. The student must also be majoring in news/editorial, advertising, photojournalism or broadcasting.       North Carolina State University offers a Minority Advertising Intern Program. Besides giving students "a realistic view of advertising working environments" the honor also offers $250. Applications are due by January 28.

    School-based Advertising Scholarships

    • Wichita State University's Elliott School of Communication offers the Armstrong-Shank Creative Award. This award goes to an advertising or public relations student who shows the most creativity. Applications are made available in March, either in room 102 of Elliott Hall or through a faculty member.

      Western Kentucky University offers a number of advertising scholarships. Three of those that award the most money are The David B. Whitaker Scholarship, the John B. and Clarence M. Gaines Scholarship and the Frances Richards Journalism Scholarship. All award amounts are current as of 2009.

      The David B. Whitaker Scholarship is awarded to an advertising student in his or her junior year that displays outstanding student publication work, a sense of leadership and involvement in the environment around him and a "demonstration of aptitude and attitude" in his advertising major. The award is $1,000.

      The Frances Richards Journalism Scholarship is much like the Whitaker Scholarship when it comes to requirements; leadership and involvement, student publication work and aptitude and attitude, but this award envelopes news/editorial and photojournalism majors as well as advertising. The award is worth $1,200.

      The John B. and Clarence M. Gaines Scholarship is awarded to a Western Kentucky University advertising major who displays financial need. The student must be an upper-classman who displays professional growth potential, maintains motivation amongst peers and is active in advertising activities. The award is $1,500. Decisions will be made during summer session and recipients will be notified before the fall semester.

      The University of Texas at Austin also offers financial aid packages for advertising majors. Three of these are the Carroll Cartwright Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Advertising, the GSD&M Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Advertising and the Norm Campbell Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Advertising. At UT-Austin, one application covers all awards offered by the school. Application instructions can be found here (http://communication.utexas.edu/students/applicationinstructions.html) The application is available in March and can be used to apply for all three scholarships.

      The Carol Cartwright Scholarship is available to any public relations or advertising major. However, the student must be an undergraduate. The award is worth $3,000.

      The GSD&M Scholarship is sponsored by GSD&M, an advertising agency located in Austin. The student must be an advertising or public relations undergraduate. This award is worth $2,000.

      The Norm Campbell Scholarship is open only to undergraduates majoring in advertising. The award is also $2,000.

    Privately Funded Minority Scholarships

    • Scholarship for Students of Color Studying Communications
      The RDW Group began their grant to "encourage greater participation of students of color in the study of communications". RDW rates as one of the largest advertising organizations in the New England area to date.

      To be eligible, an undergraduate or graduate student of color must be on track to achieve a degree in a course of study having to do with advertising. This can include cinematography, graphic arts or anything related. You must also be in need of financial aid, a resident of Rhode Island and "able to demonstrate your commitment to a career in communications." The scholarship is worth $2,000.       Lagrant Foundation Scholarship
      The Lagrant Foundation presents 10 ethnic minority students per year with an award for $2,000. Undergraduates and high school seniors are both eligible, but must be planning to major in advertising, public relations, journalism or marketing. The cut off date for applications is March 31.     Privately Funded Minority Scholarships

    • Jackie Robinson Foundation, Inc.
      For minority high school seniors there is the scholarship provided by the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Inc. An applicant must be a U.S. citizen, have financial need, good grades that have earned him or her a slot at a 4 year college, leadership qualities and an SAT score of at least 1000 or an ACT composite of 21.

      This award is worth up to $6,000. Request an application by writing only.

      Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Higher Education Program
      For those of Choctaw Indian descent, there is the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Higher Education Program. Applicants must be able to provide a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood and have been admitted to a U.S. college or university. Grant funds vary from $400 to $800 per semester based upon hours, classification and financial need. Scholarship funds also vary based upon the same criteria with an added GPA criterion from $500 o $1,000 per semester. To apply, write to:

      Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
      The Gates Millennium Scholars Program provides minority students with money for room and board, other expenses through college and full tuition. This award is open to all students high school level through graduate level.

      The student must have at least a 3.3 GPA, be a U.S. resident, have met Pell Grant criterion and have shown leadership abilities. Students must also be nominated by faculty at their institution and write an essay about his or her future goals.

    Scholarships not Specific to Advertising

    • Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Inc.
      Fifty National scholars and 200 Regional scholars will receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively, from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. High school seniors who are U.S. citizens and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 must apply between August 1 and October 31. The senior cannot be a child or grandchild of a Coca-Cola or Coca-Cola bottling plant employee.

      U.S. Department of Education, Upward Bound Program

      If determined to 'move on up' from the family legacy of not attending a higher learning institute, then make sure to check into the Upward Bound Program. Applicants who will be first generation college students or those from low income families should contact
      their high school counselor for a list of organizations in their state that participate in the Upward Bound Program
