Scholarships for Minority Nursing Students

The nursing work force has long underrepresented minority groups, according to a 2003 speech by American Association of Colleges of Nursing Executive Director Polly Bednash, who said a national survey at the time found only 12.3 percent of nurses came from minority populations. A number of scholarship programs respond to that issue with the dual purpose of rewarding academic achievement and expanding diversity in nursing.
  1. Minority Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship Program

    • The Minority Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship Program, sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital, offers merit-based funding to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue degrees in nursing or related fields. The program is open to residents of selected Connecticut counties. As of 2010, scholarship winners receive $2,000 per year for up to four years. Recipients have no commitment to Yale-New Haven Hospital after college.
