Scholarships for Older Students to Attend College

Scholarships are a way to receive funding to assist with the costs of higher education. There are many scholarships available to meet the needs of almost any student, including the older population who perhaps are returning to school to continue their education. Different organizations as well as colleges and universities offer a variety of scholarships, and they are a great alternative to loans as they do not need to be repaid.
  1. Jeannette Rankin Foundation Women's Education Fund

    • The Jeannette Rankin Foundation Women's Education Fund awards several scholarships of up to $1,500 to women who are 35 years of age or over. To be eligible, women must be enrolled in or have been accepted into a vocational or technical training program or be pursuing their associate's or bachelor's degree. It is also required that the program or school that applicant is attending be accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. Income is also a factor; based on the students house hold income for the coming school year. For example those who have a household size of one their income must be at or below $13,578 while if the household size is 3 income must be at or below $30,542. Each application is based on applicants goals, plan of action to reach one's goals, challenges that face the applicant as well as addressing the applicants financial need. The application process has been closed for the 2010 school year but look for more information on their website around the 1st of November for instructions and an application for the 2011 school year or any years after.     Scott Scribes Scholarship for Adults

    • The Scott Scribes Scholarship for Adults is available for students who are pursuing a career in journalism, writing or a related field such as mass communication or public relations/advertising. The applicant must be a resident of Texas, age 40 and over on or before the due date of the application, demonstrate interest in pursing a journalism career and have financial need. The scholarship can be used toward tuition at an accredited college or university.The application much be printed and sent through the mail with all required information no later than the first Friday in February in order to be eligible for assistance for the fall semester.

    Adult Students in Scholastic Transition

    • Executive Women International established the Adult Students in Scholastic Transition or ASIST program for adults to receive financial assistance. First, applicants compete on the local chapter level. Once the winners of the chapter levels are selected, the winners then compete on a national level for one of twelve available $2,500 scholarships. Each chapter has its own deadlines for submitting applications. Individuals can visit the scholarship website to find the list of chapters with participating ASIST programs.
