Scholarships for Minority Older Students

There are several scholarships available to older minority students who wish to initiate or continue a college education. Returning to school provides opportunities for personal fulfillment, career advancement and an increase in income potential. Going to college can be expensive, but several organizations allocate scholarship funds for individuals who require financial assistance.
  1. Julianne Malveaux Scholarship

    • The Julianne Malveaux Scholarship is available from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club (NANBPWC) to African American females who are currently enrolled in their sophomore or junior year in college. Students must major in economics, journalism or a similar field at an accredited college or university and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must submit a completed application, two letters of recommendation (one from a professor or academic advisor and the other from a NANBPWC member) , a college transcript and an essay explaining how the applicant's career aspirations relate to the scholarship theme "Black Women's Hands Can Rock the World." Recipients are awarded a $1,000 prize.

    Hispanic College Fund

    • Hispanic women have access to scholarship funds through the Hispanic College Fund. Students have to be of Hispanic descent and must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Puerto Rico. Applicants also must be enrolled full time at an accredited undergraduate program at a college or university.

    Sister to Sister Scholarship

    • The Dr. Wynetta A. Frazier "Sister to Sister" Scholarship is given to African American women who are 25 or older and are going back to college without the moral or financial assistance of a spouse. Applicants may have initially left school to gain employment or care for children. Two recipients are awarded the $500 prize annually.

    Jeanette Rankin Foundation Grants for Low Income Women

    • The Jeanette Rankin Foundation Grants for Low Income Women is a non-profit organization that offers scholarships to African American women aged 35 and over enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a technical or vocational certificate, associate's degree or bachelor's degree and demonstrate financial need.

    Business and Professional Women's Foundation

    • The Business and Professional Women's Foundation allocates scholarship funds to African American women aged 25 and over in financial need who are returning to school for career advancement or job training.

    Wilbert L. Miles Scholarship

    • The Wilbert L. Miles Scholarship is awarded annually to two African American veterans of the Vietnam war and three African American people who have survived domestic violence. Applicants must present proof of the scholarship requirements and demonstrate financial need.

    Chi Eta Phi Sorority

    • The Chi Eta Phi Sorority allocates funds to African American members of the sorority currently enrolled in bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree nursing programs. Applicants must show proof of financial need, leadership and contributions to the minority nurse advancement. One scholarship is awarded annually in the average amount of $1,000.

    Truman Medical Center Nurses Alumnae

    • The Truman Medical Center awards scholarships to African American students who currently attend an accredited nursing program in the United States. For award consideration, students must write an essay that addresses the following: "Why I chose the field of nursing" and "What this award would mean to me." Students must also submit three references, official transcripts and a current passport picture. If the student remains maintains a high GPA the scholarship can be renewed.
