Art Schools in DC

Home to treasures such as the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian museums and countless statues and monuments, Washington, D.C. has a thriving arts community. Along with sources of inspiration, there are plenty of schools and classes available for the aspiring artist.
  1. Washington Studio School

    • Washington Studio School was founded in 1985 as a nonprofit community of artists and students, studying visual arts. Students at the school learn art history and contemporary art techniques in small classes (between eight and 10 students). Instructors are practicing artists, and have degrees in fine arts. Classes are available for all levels of students, from adults to high school.

    Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts

    • At Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts' Washington D.C. campus, students can study 3D animation, audio production, digital filmmaking, graphic and web design, photography and web development. Faculty at the center are active in professions outside of academia, and pride themselves in being well-versed in the latest developments in digital creative arts.

    Art Institute of Washington

    • The Art Institute of Washington is a branch of the Art Institute of Atlanta. On its Arlington, Virginia campus, students can study visual arts, photography, advertising design and dozens of other fields. The institute was founded in 2000, and the student/faculty ratio is 20-to-1.

    The Art League

    • The Art League is a nonprofit organization of artists founded in 1954. The league operates a school with approximately 2,000 students as of 2010. Classes are available in areas from pottery to painting and bookmaking.
