Montana Culinary Art Schools

Education for aspiring chefs, restaurateurs, and caterers is available at select Montana schools, as well as in nearby Wyoming. With so many seasonal activities available in Montana, there are many opportunities for trained chefs. Whether the goal is to be an executive chef in an award-winning restaurant or to create gourmet camp food, there is a school for it.
  1. University of Montana College of Technology

    • Located in Missoula, Montana, the University of Montana College of Technology offers career focused education that gives students the skills employers demand. The Culinary Arts program prepares graduates for a position in the food service industry. Two programs are offered, a Certificate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts and an Associate of Applied Science in Food Service Management. Both tracks have classroom and practical instruction. The certificate prepares graduates for a position as a line or dinner cook, while the associate's degree includes a supervised internship and readies graduates for chef positions.

    Flathead Valley Community College

    • Just half an hour from Glacier National Park and other wilderness areas in Kalispell, Montana, Flathead Community College offers students a wide variety of educational possibilities. Included in its lineup is a culinary arts program that prepares students for employment in the food service industry. Not only do students receive an education in cooking and baking techniques, they also learn about creating menus, cost control, table service, and good storeroom practices. Students will understand what it takes to run the kitchen in a restaurant, as well as the dining room.

    Royal Tine's Camp Cook School

    • This cooking school focuses on providing instruction for those who are cooking in the back country. Those who complete the course are ready to work with outdoor guides, providing quality food cooked with basic tools. Cast iron Dutch oven cooking is covered, as well as pit cooking techniques. Students also learn about planning menus, inventory needs, baking, wild game cooking, high altitude adjustments, and other topics. Classes are hands-on, and every student plays a part in the education experience.

    Central Wyoming College

    • Next door to Montana, the Central Wyoming College (CWC) Culinary Arts program is located in Jackson, Wyoming. Students learn in the bakeries and state of the art kitchens in the Four Seasons Resort at Teton Village. The Associate of Applied Science degree offered by CWC prepares students for careers in food service management, as well as the restaurant, hospitality and hotel industries. CWC has worked out agreements with the University of Houston, University of Nevada Las Vegas, and Johnson and Wales University to allow culinary students to transfer credits towards a Bachelor of Culinary Arts degree.
