Cullinary Art Schools

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most chefs, head cooks and food preparation supervisors in the food service industry have at least some postsecondary training as of 2011. Culinary art schools offer classes and degrees to budding professionals and hands-on experience to more casual home cooks who want to improve their skills.
  1. Art Institutes: The International Culinary Schools

    • The Art Institutes, with locations in the U.S. and Canada, offers degree programs in culinary arts and culinary management. Study focuses on more than 20 international cuisines and includes lectures, internships, study abroad programs and hands-on work in restaurants. Management classes range from the basics of opening a restaurant to human resources and understanding food regulations. Graduates of the school have competed on television programs like Hell's Kitchen and Next Food Network Star. The curriculum varies from location to location.

    International Culinary Center

    • The International Culinary Center, located in New York City, is home to the Italian Culinary Academy and the French Culinary Institute. The center includes a recreational division for non-professionals, a Food Journalism and New Media department and is affiliated with the Professional Culinary Institute in Campbell, California. The French Culinary Institute offers six- to nine-month courses in classic techniques, pasty making and bread making. The Italian Academy uses a total immersion method, combining courses in language and culture with cuisine in New York and Parma, Italy.

    Johnson & Wales University College of Culinary Arts

    • Johnson & Wales, with campuses in Providence, Miami, Denver and Charlotte, offers degree programs with an emphasis on hands-on learning. The university relies on input from industry professionals to keep up with trends. In addition to training in basic techniques and advanced disciplines, students learn how to run the front of the house. Johnson & Wales offers students work-study opportunities at restaurants, hotels and resorts. Study abroad exchange programs last from three weeks to five months and are available as early as freshmen year.

    L'Ecole Culinaire

    • L'Ecole Culinaire, located in Memphis and St. Louis, offers coursework for future professionals and novices. Ten-week courses focus on one subject in a student's chosen field. Students nearing graduation prepare meals for the public at the school's onsite restaurant, where part of the proceeds go to support students with financial need. The culinary management program prepares students with knowledge of the business aspects of the industry. Both locations offer cooking classes for the public. A percentage of course fees from classes for novices goes to local charities.
