Utah Culinary Schools

Culinary schools prepare students for careers in the food preparation and service industry. Combining both classroom study and hands-on cooking exercises, most programs cover the same types of information in varying degree and certificate options. Utah is home to several schools that offer a culinary arts degree or certificate.
  1. Snow College

    • Snow College offers one degree and two certificate programs in the culinary arts at its Richfield campus. The 26-credit Certificate of Proficiency includes courses in baking and pastries, hot food preparation, short order cooking and cold food preparation. Students who complete an additional 20 credit hours in courses including sanitation, applied technical math and professional development are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion. Snow also offers an Associate of Applied Science for students who complete the 46 certificate hours and an additional 20 hours in catering, advanced cooking courses and food service nutrition. The program includes both classroom theory and hands-on learning to prepare students for careers as caterers, restaurant managers, line cooks, bakers, cake decorators and food service managers.

    Utah Valley University

    • The culinary arts program at Utah Valley University in Orem leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in culinary arts. The 68-credit program includes coursework in food service sanitation, cooking skills development, baking, and purchasing and storeroom management. Students complete an eight-credit internship on campus by preparing menus and food at Greg's Restaurant and for various events held at the McKay Events Center. Students have the opportunity to compete at culinary arts events and are eligible for scholarships offered by the department.

    Salt Lake Community College

    • The Culinary Institute at Salt Lake Community College is located on the Miller campus and provides students with the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree. The degree program requires 67 credits of course work in classes such as marketing, food preparation, baking, continental cuisine and catering management. In addition, students must complete 2,000 paid intern hours. This program is the only one in Utah accredited by the American Culinary Federation. Students can expect to complete the program in two years and often participate in culinary competitions.

    Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College

    • Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College in Ogden offers a culinary arts degree culminating in a Culinary Arts Certificate. Students can expect to complete the program in about eight months; they must take 930 hours of instruction in such topics as baking, workplace relations, sanitation, soups/stocks/sauces and catering management. Learning experiences include self-study, instructor-guided and taught courses, and practical experience.
